My, MY, MY! Did I Get My Good Side Or What?

Season Two begins two weeks earlier than I thought?

Hello, and welcome to season two of my music review series. To start off this seas I want to take a look at the first two singles off of Australian pop-singer Troye Sivan's upcoming second studio album. The first of the two singles is titled "My My, My" released on January 10th of this year. The next one is titled "The Good Side" and was released just over a week later on January 19th. This song is the one that I am the most excited about and the one I will be breaking down in further detail. 

But before we get to that. Here are a few things you should know about Troye before we begin our review. He was born in Johannesburg,  South Africa, but moved to Perth, Australia when he was two. He started his YouTube channel back in 2012 and did random vid, occasionally posting an odd cover or two of his singing. He gained notoriety for his video "The Boyfriend Tag" to which he gained a Teen Choice award for his collaboration with fellow YouTuber Tyler Oakley. He has also been in the Spud franchise of movies as well as playing the young James Howlett in the 2009 movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". While those are amazing accomplishments, they are not the topic of discussion today. Today we are talking about his music. Prior to the work on this album coming up we have only had his two EP's "TRXYE" and "Wild". Then just a few months after his last EP we got his debut studio album "Blue Neighborhood" which was released back in December of 2015. And up until A week ago we haven't had a release from him. So let's dig into his two new songs.

MY, MY, MY Review:

It is clear in this song that he is talking about exploring his sexual liberation. Whereas we saw the exploration of him trying to find himself, and come to terms with sexuality and what it is to him. now that he has found himself and set free his inner desires he pens the lyrics "Now, let's stop running from love. Running from love. Let's stop, my baby. Let's stop running from us. Running from us. Let's stop, my baby" In his interview with Zach Sang, Troye commented on the real-life relationship that inspired these lyrics: "It was sort of, was about like, when we’re gonna give this up? […] Just kinda stop denying what we are and let’s just like… go for it." He also pens the lyrics "I die every night with you" in the chorus which could be a reference to the french expression “la petite mort,” or “the little death,” a euphemism for the sensation of orgasm. Although the phrase didn’t originally have a sexual connotation, instead referring to a general loss of cognizance, its modern usage specifically refers to the post-orgasm state of subdued consciousness that some people experience. 

Also in the chorus we get the line "Living for your every move" which in the interview with Zach Sang the day before “My My My!” dropped, Troye explained the true meaning behind this lyric after he was asked if it’s healthy to literally “live for someone’s every move in a relationship”: "I think, maybe don’t take it as literally as that. Maybe in that particular moment you’re living for that person’s every move." And lastly in the bridge you have the line where Troye is speaking sort of possessively. Penning the line "Got my name on his treasure" seemingly speaking that he is his lovers one and only, and that Troye is his lovers one and only.  All in all this song plays to him being madly in love with his boyfriend and vice/versa. And in this song he is done with the running and wants them to give into to each other and their desires.

"THE GOOD SIDE" Review: 

The single "MY, MY, MY" was all about liberation and giving in to your love for each other. But on to "THE GOOD SIDE" we see that it is a song that is an apology. An apology to whom, you might ask? It is an apology to the unnamed guy in the "Blue Neighborhood".  And since this one is so personal to Troye, and since I can hear in his voice as he sings, this one deserves a deep dive. So I won't just gloss over it like the previous song. On to verse one...

Verse One: Right off the bat we get a simple instrumental opening that blends into an overall acoustic song. He starts with the lyrics, "I got the good side of things. Left you with both of the rings. My fingers danced and swayed in the breeze. The change in the wind took you down to your knees" Troye sings about leaving a committed relationship (symbolized by rings) and leaving behind a partner who was completely heartbroken. He feels that he got “the good side of things”, in that he was able to move on from the relationship with a newfound sense of freedom, through the success of his music. "I got the good side of you. Send it out into the blue" Troye had captured the good moments in their relationship and sent them out to the world as his songs. This could also be a metaphor referring to the act of posting pictures/videos of a partner: to get someone on their “good side” is to take a flattering picture of them. "The people danced to the sound of your heart. The world sang along to it falling apart" This is Troye referring to songs in "Blue Neighborhood" regarding this particular relationship and breakup, acknowledging how he had the advantage and the therapeutic experience of writing and performing as a way of moving on and recovering. He is also acknowledging that because he wrote songs about their relationship, the listeners got to hear about both the loving and painful memories of their relationship. The world sang along to both the relationship and his ex’s heart falling apart.

Verse Two: After the first chorus he jumps into the future. how he has found so many  "I got the good side of life. Traveled the universe twice. So many thoughts I wanted to share. But I didn't call because it wouldn't be fair" He tells his lover throughout the song that he has been given the opportunity to see the world and do things that he has always wanted do. However, somewhere in the back of his mind, he has wanted to give his lover a call to tell him about all of the adventures he’s been on, and where the music industry has taken him. However, he knew that it wasn’t fair on his lover because these new opportunities ultimately led to Troye having less time for him and the couple drifting apart. "Then I got the good side of new. Found arms to fall right into. I know how it looked, it wasn't the plan. And some day I hope that you'll understand" Troye expresses how the changes continued to benefit him because along the way he fell in love with someone. He revealed that it was never his plan to fall into someone else arms in the way that he did – it just happened like catching or bumping into something on an endless-flowing river. He also hopes that one day, his previous lover would eventually understand and forgive him. These lines refer to Troye moving on with his current boyfriend, Jacob Bixenman. The pair went public with their relationship in late 2016.

Chorus and Bridge: In between the verses we get the chorus. A simple, and genuine recognition of what he has done to his former first love. Troye expresses throughout the song that he feels incredibly guilty for putting his lover in the situation that he did. Troye see how hurt his lover has been throughout the process of watching Troye grow and change. He realises that his actions hurt this person and he attempts to reach out and is incredibly apologetic that he got the good side of it all and his lover got only got hurt. He simply states that in these lyrics, " That I sympathize, and I recognize. And baby, I apologize. That I got the good side. The good side of things"  Moving on to the bridge, which comes before the final chorus. "I'm sure we'll meet in the spring. And catch up on everything. I'll say I'm proud of all that you've done. You taught me the ropes, and you taught me to love" Troye hopes that they can resolve the bad feelings and meet in the future. This lover was his first genuine love, and he wants them to be able to share both of their accomplishments with each other. Although, Troye talks about his own growth in the song, this stanza suggests that even though his ex got the bad side of the breakup he was still able accomplished great things and Troye is happy for him.

The Wrap-Up: My, My, My. This has been one whirlwind of an off season. But at least it got The Good Side of me. So that concludes the first review of season two.
